Is Nike a fashion brand or a sportswear brand? Judging by what’s on Instagram, it’s a bit of both. Bella Hadid and Nike recently partnered and she visited the flagship store in Paris at Les Halles (a massive mall on the right bank) on June 10, 2017. She join the Nike roster of faces, which includes of Serena Williams and Gabby Douglas.
The model was in the City of Light for Nike’s shoe Cortez, a throwback shoe with a modern look.
The shoe, the legacy
It was 1972 when Nike created its first-ever track shoe, the Cortez. Back then the company was new and it launched the original Cortez version during that Summer Olympics. It instantly became popular. You may recognize it as the shoe Farrah Fawcett wore in that famous photo of her skate boarding, which Haidid recently recreated.
The Cortez shoe, which Hadid was sporting at the press conference, was a new take on the original, Nike said in a press release, that was inspired by Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson. The silhouette of the shoe is true to the shoe’s heritage – sleek shape, leather upper, seven-hole lace-ups and a spongey wedge sole. It’s a definite ’70s trend throwback, when shoes like the Adidas SL Trainer and the New Balance 320 were popular (and are again). The shoe is available to buy online in Canada at nike.com for $120.

The update to Hadid’s kicks, though, include white perforated leather with gold accents. The inside of the shoe you’ll find written “one life, one chance,” which is Thompson’s mantra. And the aglets on the laces are engraved with the sprinters winning times, 21:78 for 200 meters; 10:71 for 100 meters.
Hadid, sister of model Gigi and daughter of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’s Yolanda, isn’t the only model/reality star with a sportswear deal. Recently Kylie Jenner’s Puma ad was criticized for using the reality star instead of a real athlete, critiquing her running form in the ad. So as long as Nike doesn’t use Hadid as an athletic example for the Cortez shoe, she won’t have to run a mile in Jenner’s shoes.
