Baby Joseph passed away at home with his family Tuesday. The sad announcement was made on the Save Baby Joseph Facebook page where hundreds have posted condolences.

If you don’t remember Baby Joseph’s case, here’s some background on how Joseph Maraachli became the centre of an international right-to-life debate and legal battle. The infant suffered from an incurable degenerative brain disease. When he was first admitted to a London, Ont. hospital doctors recommended his breathing tube be removed since there was no chance of recovery. His family refused and sparked a global right-to-life debate.

When a foundation called the Priests for Life heard about Baby Joseph’s case, they helped fund his transfer to an American hospital where he had a tracheotomy to help him breathe on his own. (The London, Ont. hospital refused to perform this procedure, calling it too invasive). The family even took legal action against the hospital but lost the provincial court battle.

The family flew back to Windsor in March and cared for Baby Joseph from home for the past seven months.
