Are you drinking more than you think?

Thank God It’s Friday! If that’s your rallying cry as you head for a few post-work cocktails, you might want to keep the sobering conclusions of a new study in mind.

William C. Kerr and his colleagues at the Alcohol Research Group at the Public Health Institute discovered that many bars are serving up a lot more than you think, as ScienceDaily reports.

Their analysis of drinks served in Northern California bars and restaurants revealed that the average glass of wine was 43 percent larger than a standard drink, the average draft beer was 22 percent larger than the standard, and mixed drinks were 42 percent larger than the standard.

In other words, you may be downing almost twice the alcohol that you think you’re drinking.

(I was in Las Vegas last weekend and I would swear the drinks there are triple strength!)

I don’t think this alcohol supersizing is unique to California or the U.S., either. The rise of martinis, 14-percent wines, coolers and blender drinks at Canadian bars and eateries mean we’re slugging back more alcohol—and calories—than we may suspect. (According to thedailyplate.com, for instance, a single margarita could serve up as many as 325 calories.) I know, I know: I’m crying, too.

But seriously, it’s something to consider if you’re the designated driver ordering “just one drink”, or if you’re sticking to just a few drinks for health reasons.

What do you think? Are drinks getting bigger in the establishments you go to?
