Winter hair masks will help you fall in love with your locks again

There is tons of talk about taking care of your skin during the winter with a #SelfcareSunday mask. But it is your hair that really needs some love. Enter hair masks. Hair masks rank high on my list of ride or die beauty products. Without them my many-textured curls appear more frizzy, less fabulous.

Hair apparent

When I discovered a line of overnight masks from Sephora I was instantly intrigued – thanks in no small part to the adorable and highly ’grammable packaging.

Getting ahead

Designed to be left on while you get your beauty rest, each pouch comes complete with a dollop of mask and the cutest hair cap you ever did see. (Discovering this well-designed cap was a game-changer. SO cute, right?)

I chose the rose formula, which claims to smooth and prevent frizz. There’s also coconut for nourishing and repairing (currently sold out online), açai to protect colour and boost radiance and shea for preventing breakage. Priced on par with a festive hot beverage, you can treat yourself to more than one with zero guilt.

This is the sneaky reason you suddenly have dandruff.

The mane event

As the owner of a lot of hair, that takes up a lot of space, I doubted there would a) be enough mask product offered to saturate my strands, and b) that the shower cap could effectively contain my not-small mane. Once the application process was complete I went off to bed happily wrong on both fronts.

Sleeping hair mask success! Not only did the cap manage to stay on, but my curls felt seriously hydrated in the a.m. Now that cold weather and heated indoor temps have settled in – a.k.a. torture for dry hair – I’m adding this overnight treatment to my beauty routine from now until the spring thaw.

Best for frayed or split ends

Choosing this royal jelly and honey-infused treatment is a smart first step, but to finish strong you must hair mask like a pro!

Follow these three steps from Roger Medina, Garner hair expert, to maximize results:

  1. Take time to brush hair thoroughly before applying mask to dry hair, focusing on the ends.
  2. Use enough product to saturate hair and massage it in.
  3. Wrap hair in a shower cap, or plastic bag, and let mask absorb for 20 minutes.

Garnier Whole Blends Honey Treasure Repairing Mask, $9, available at mass and drug retailers across Canada.
