Is your hair thinning?
Join the club – 1 in 3 women experience hair thinning. We’ll let you in on some valuable secrets to stimulate hair growth, minimize breakage and boost volume.
Washing & Conditioning
1. Do massage your scalp with your finger pads before washing to increase blood flow and exfoliate pores.
2. Don’t overwash. Try to shampoo every other day. Between washes, use a dry shampoo or dab blotting papers on the oily hairs around your face.
3. Do use a mild clarifying shampoo or a volumizing shampoo. Volumizing shampoos usually contain ingredients like protein that coat the hair and make it appear fuller, but they won’t regrow hair or prevent hair loss from worsening.
4. Don’t use shampoos with sulfates because they can strip hair of its natural oils.
5. Don’t use conditioning shampoos. They can weigh down hair and make it look limp.
6. Do use a light conditioner formulated for fine hair. Avoid heavy intensive conditioners.
7. Don’t apply conditioner all over your scalp and hair. Apply it to the ends only.
8. Do pat wet hair gently with a microfibre towel to absorb moisture and minimize breakage.
9. Don’t wrap wet hair in a towel turban.
Combing, Brushing & Styling
1. Do embrace a more tousled wash-and-go style. It’s easier to pull off and maintain with thinner hair, and you can back-brush trouble spots to give the appearance of more volume.
2. Don’t overbrush because it can cause split ends.
3. Do use a quality wide-tooth comb or a brush with soft, rounded bristle tips. Avoid fine-tooth combs and brushes with sharp bristles.
4. Do use a detangling brush made for wet hair if your hair is wavy. For tips on how to style thin curly or wavy hair, check out these videos with celebrity stylist Jill Crosby.
5. Do limit the amount of times you blow-dry, straighten or curl because excessive heat can damage hair. Air-dry as often as possible.
6. Do turn your head upside down when blow-drying to make hair look fuller.
7. Do use Velcro rollers instead of hot rollers.
8. Don’t wear ponytails, braids or cornrows continuously because they pull and stretch the hair, leading to breakage.
9. Don’t get hair extensions. The tension can lead to increased thinning.
10. Don’t use tight hair elastics, wrap hair bands around your head or pull hair firmly into clips. Put hair back loosely instead.
Haircuts
1. Do ask your stylist about a new haircut to make hair look fuller (like a pixie cut).
2. Do experiment with bangs, which can give the illusion of more hair.
3. Do try a zigzag part for some oomph at the roots.
4. Don’t have hair that’s all one length. Subtle layers can fake dimension.
5. Do get regular trims to keep split ends at bay.
Colouring
1. Do experiment with colour, which expands the hair shafts and makes them thicker.
2. Do try highlights or lowlights around the face to add dimension and warmth.
3. Don’t go too dark, especially if your skin is lighter than your hair. It can emphasize the contrast between your scalp and hair.
4. Do avoid ombré tones. Dark roots and light tips accentuates thinning around the crown.
5. Don’t use too much bleach. It can be harsh and cause hair to get dry and brittle.
